  Was employed by merchants as supercargo of horses to what was then called the "Spanish Main" in the northern part of South America. He died there and his remains were on board the vessel on its return home. When off Cape Hatteras the ship encountered a severe storm, and everything was cast over-board. This is what as meant as "lost at sea." [1]
